- September 11, 2007
As you've noticed, the BD's website has now
moved. Since the last issue is approaching I found it having its own site
pointless. I will continue to piggy back the site for a year after the close
of the issue, at which time the site will be eliminated. I had considered
running the magazine as a web only zine last year, however due to someone
else starting up just a site recently, that isn't something I will persue.
On to the important news ... Since I started
a full time job last month, things have been very hectic here to say the
least! The first three weeks were day hours, which that in itself was tough
as I'm not a morning person. I'm now on my regular hours of 6:30 PM to 3
AM. However, I am still learning how to balance work, work and life. Due
to this I am extending the deadline of the FINAL issue of the Borzoi Digest to September 29, 2007.
Remember ALL pages are $75, there will be no
preferred position rates in celebration of the 6 years of support everyone
has given! For those doing multiple pages, you will receive a $10 discount
on all pages as a personal thank you from me.
To those who have given support to who've been there for me, thank you
much!
Respectfully,
Mary Magee, editor
- March 24, 2007 Just a heads up that the new insert issue has
been mailed! I hope all you enjoy it and the Whippet Watch that you will
receive. This is the next to the last ever Borzoi Digest and extras are on
a very limited supply so if you wish to purchase one, please do so promptly
- once they are gone .. they are gone.
Vol 5 Iss 2's deadline is set for August 13, 2007. Be sure to get your
ad and article items in on a timely manner.
To those who have given support to the magazine over the past six years,
thank you much!

January 22, 2007 Thank you to everyone who wrote or called with
their support and opinions on the Borzoi Digest, I truly am touched and appreciate
it! Now for the decision ...
In consideration of ongoing financial concerns with the Borzoi Digest,
and the desire to continue to serve those who have faithfully supported this
publication, I have come to a decision that I believe will be very workable.
In two issues this year (2007) of the Whippet Watch, there will be a special
Borzoi section added as an insert and those issues will be mailed to both
magazines' subscribers with the inserts going to all the judges and the BD
subscribers/advertisers. This will give the BD fans the opportunity to celebrate
the accomplishments of their dogs in a publication that will be mailed, as
always, free of charge to all US resident AKC hound group judges, and to
keep up with the latest Borzoi information.
This change will be in effect for at least one year, to finish out all
previously paid Borzoi Digest subscriptions. If the new bi-annual combo magazine
is well received and supported, I will consider continuing to include Borzoi
coverage in two issues per year, and allowing Borzoi fanciers to subscribe
to only those issues if they wish. Thank you for your time; special thanks
to all who have written in support of the Borzoi Digest and those who have
been faithful subscribers of and advertisers. I look forward to serving you
and your wonderful dogs in the future.
Also just as an FYI for the coming issue, the deadline to get your Borzoi
in is Jan 25th, a mere 3 days from today. I DO accept digital files for the
ads, please email me or hit up either magazine's website for the specs and
please let me know if you do want a page. This issue's FULL PAGE black and
white rate is ONLY $65!!!! Where else can you get this coverage (200+ AKC
Hound Judges) for this low of a cost?
To those who will have ads in this issue, please send in your items to
me as promptly as possible, and again ... THANK YOU!
Respectfully,

January 2007 Well I'd hoped I wouldn't have to send this
type of notice out but ... since the new issue's ad deadline has come and
gone with not nearly enough ad spots requested I'm left at a crossroad.
The choices before me are:
A) to continue on but hold up the new issue til there are enough ads (which
is not fair to those who have submitted ads on a timely basis)
B) to combine this issue of the BD's ads with the
coming Whippet Watch
giving a section for the Borzoi owners/readers/advertisers (this is the logical
choice)
C) to simply give up, returning all pre-submitted items to their rightful
owners
So ... what to do? It isn't a secret that the BD has fought tooth
and nail to keep going for the 4 plus years, why I'll never know since it
*is* the most affordable advertising AND the magazine goes free to all AKC
Hound Group Judges, besides the fact that it is *NOT* just a "show rag" as
it has wonderful articles from breeders as well as vets and those participating
in a multitude of venues, but it is how it is.
I'm more than happy to run the two magazines in conjunction with one
another twice a year, details would have to be worked out as the is still
a bi monthly magazine and the WatchBD is semi annual
which could be worked out in a couple ways but I have to hear from those
who read and advertise ... PLEASE email me privately as to your thoughts
and feelings on this. It's **YOUR** magazine, if you wish to see it continue
I have to hear from you. If, however, you feel loosing another breed publication
is fine ... let me know you feel there is no need for the BD again and I'll
close the doors.
It's all up to you ...

December 2006 As
of the coming issue (Vol. 5 Iss. 1) the Borzoi Digest will
be going to a new format size of 8" x 10 1/2" which will allow full bleeds
of all ads (where the ad extends to the edge of the page). Also we will now
be running the magazine direct to plate to give all our readers and advertisers
a higher quality finished product!!! Our sister publication, the Whippet Watch, had
these changes on their recent issue and the readers were very pleased. We
are thrilled about these changes and hope you will be too! If you are wanting
to place an ad and haven't touched base with us, please do so (via the contact
page).
Now for a bit of an update with things here
in the office, first about the next issue: Vol. 5 Iss. 1. The ad deadline
is January 8th, 2007 to allow everyone a bit of time to rest after the busy
Holiday Season. With the end of the year right around the corner, holiday
expenses for everyone, and my printer being closed from mid December til
after the New Year it seems the best solution. If you have not reserved your
spot yet, please do so promptly by emailing me or Sally from the contacts
page, either of us will be happy to assist you. If you use the code "web
rate" a full page black and white ad will be a mere $65 instead of the regular
rate of $75 (one photo per page, additional photos at $10 each).
For those wishing to do a tribute, please
refer to that section which is listed on the rates page. Also there are new pre
designed ad specs listed on that page for those of you preferring to do your
own ad design. Please note that information as well as the info on what files
are not accepted.
Last, but by no means least ... thank you
to every person who has given support, each author, advertiser and subscriber.
YOU are the backbone,
you are what makes the Digest what it is!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart and may 2007 be wonderful for all of
you!

May 2006 News:
After
a lot of thought and lots of requests from the readers I've opted to keep
the BD alive but at a reduced publication rate. As of this coming issue the
BD will now be published on a semi-annual basis. The deadline for Vol
5 Iss 1 will be November 30th, 2006 and will be mailed in January
of 2007, Vol 5 Iss 2's deadline will be May 30th and mailing will
be in July of 2007. This will allow more time for advertisers to compile
their information, photos and so forth as well as afford me the time needed
for all my other duties.
I will be accepting these file formats for publication
from now on:
PDF files (high res, fonts embedded),
Photoshop tif or eps flattened files (200dpi),
Illustrator/Freehand eps files (text converted to outlines/paths),
and
Macintosh QuarkXPress files (all art/fonts must be included)
If you need additional information on submitting files, pease contact
Sally Long or myself through the "contact" page
Since there are issues no longer available in print, I am currently
working on saving out all previous issues to CD for those interested in purchasing
them. I'll update the website and send out notification as to when these are
available and the pricing for them. Permission will be granted for printing
these out on each CD face allowing others to share. If you are interested
in this, please contact us.
As always, thank you to everyone for your terrific support and here's
to another volume!

April 2006 News:
Just
a quick reminder to let everyone know the coming BD's deadline for ads/articles
is quickly approaching. I set it for April 30th, however <blushing>
that's on Sunday so this gives everyone an extra day so the deadline will
be May 1st. I will be gone from April 21st through April 30th (very very
late) for the AWC National so please be sure to bombard my mailbox with your
lovely dogs' photos while I'm gone.
Different than before ... I *WILL* accept pre-designed black and
white (NOT color) ad layouts in the following formats ONLY:
Acrobat PDF files
high res, all fonts *must* be embedded
Illustrator or Freehand eps files
all fonts *must* be converted to outlines prior to submission
Photoshop tif or eps files
flatten the file prior to submission, 200 dpi (dots [pixels]
per inch)
QuarkXPress MACintosh files
if this is utilized, please be sure to send all fonts, artwork
& photos
Some of these file types will be too large to email, if that's
the case, burn it to a CD and mail it in with a print out of the layout.
Also, remember the $15 discount off the full page black and white
(non preferred positions) ad rate making it only $60 for a full page b/w
ad. The front cover has been spoken for in full color and the back cover
is available also in full color, please touch base with Sally Long for more
details at: <bd_ads@yahoo.com>
Lastly, I am still actively working on selling the BD. In turn,
I've opted to keep it going at this time. I will be working on renewal
notices after my return from the AWC event, but if you wish to renew I
will be offering half year subscription: 2 issues (half year) $24 which
is half of the previous full year rate even though my costs have gone up
(again) for postage. For those advertising, you will still receive a free
issue with a full page ad.
February 2006 News:
I
have several important bits of information to share with all the readers,
advertisers, and supporters of the Borzoi Digest magazine.
First, Vol. 4 Iss. 3 has been through more delays than any
previous issue in our history, from a drag in ads coming in, to an unexpected
(but much needed) move ... well simply put: it's VERY late. That's not
something I'm happy about or pleased with - but it's due to hit press this
week (it's at the printers, but I don't know his schedule). I do hope
that everyone will allow me to extend my apology by way of a VERY LARGE
discount on all ads in the next issue. The regular rate is $75 for a full-page,
black and white ad; I will be deducting $15 off all full-page ads, and
there will be NO additional charge for extra photos! So, $60 will get
you a full-page with extra photos (please limit each page to three photos).
All cover spots will also receive the $15 discount. Please email in advance
to let me know if you will be taking advantage of this offer.
Now, about my recent move. In November it was apparent that
my life needed a drastic change. My (now previous) boyfriend and I had
been together 10 years as of December 3rd, but I felt my safety slowly
slipping away. I simply couldn't risk living with his lack of anger control
and bouts of rage any longer.
Fortunately, my family was very supportive and understood I
needed total and complete discretion if I was to get my dogs, belongings,
and self out safely and moved to an unknown location. My sons and parents
looked at houses for me, as I was unable to do so without tipping him off;
and we found the perfect place, safely tucked away where no one would be
the wiser. I am thankful for several very close friends who've been there
for me throughout all of this: the tears, the fears, and now ... the long
awaited comfort and happiness.
Domestic violence is not something for a survivor to be ashamed
of, and I'm hopeful that maybe, just maybe, with my being open and honest
about my situation and help from family and friends, others will gain the
inner strength and self preservation to get out if they find themselves
in this kind of destructive relationship. I stayed for the wrong reasons,
worrying that I couldn't "make ends meet" or that family and friends would
look differently at me ... well my life is more important than paying bills
on time, and those who love us would never look down on us when we are in
our time of need.
As you can see in the De Tails information, my phone number
is not published any longer, and I will not be using a street address
anymore. I apologize for this inconvenience, but it's all a matter of
safety. Thank you for understanding!
Please stay tuned for more information regarding the Borzoi Digest
magazine.
December 2005 News:
Well there's been a few delays with Vol. 4 Issue 3. Deepest
apologies for this untimely, but neccessary, delay.
Part of the cause of the delay was on a personal level as
I (Mary) just went through relocating and setting up a new home and office.
I'm very hopeful that this will be a very positive energy filled change
of life and that the creative juices will flow like the great tides. The
new mailing address is:
Borzoi Digest
c/o
Mary Magee
P.O.
Box 31098
Indianapolis,
IN 46231
At
this time all phone calls will be directed to Sally also. If you need
to speak directly with me please drop me an email or give Sally a call at
618.466.3066
and leave your name and number, I will get back to you right away. I apologize
for this inconvenience, but at this time it is unavoidable.
Due to this delay Vol. 4 Issue 4's deadline has also been
extended to March 1st, 2006. We hope this gives everyone a bit more time
after the Holidays. Please contact Sally Long, Ads Consultant for details/information
on placing an ad through our "Contact" page.
Deep appreciation for the kindness and care of those who
have been tremendously supportive through this event, as well as everyone's
kind understanding and continued dedication to the magazine!
September News:
Volume 4 Issue 3 will feature Veterans (7
years or older) and all Vet ads receive $10 off the full page price (regular
page, b/w or color).
As of September 30, 2005 anyone purchasing 4 full page ads
or more will receive a $5 discount on all pages!!
August News:
As most know, the Borzoi Digest (Whippet Watch &
1st Choice Collars) is produced by one person. There has never been
an official staff of layout artists, designers, promotion specialists
... only one person with a few terrific friends who assisted out of
kindness to proof read article submissions and the printing and binding
companies who do the physical production of each issue. To say this
one person (yours truly) stays busy is putting it mildly, and for several
years now I've had
many weeks of little to no sleep to keep both magazines as timely as
humanly possible. As age is creeping up on me, I have to admit that I
have to make some modifications to my work habits.
One change is that all advertising submissions
will now go through Sally Long, our new onstaff Advertising Consultant,
she can be emailed through the Contact page. Another change is the
office hours will now be: Monday - Friday; 9 am to 4 pm (Eastern Time).
All calls need to be during these hours please. While this may cause
a bit of a slower production time and in turn a bit of a delay in receiving
your new issues, however quality will not be compromized.
Lastly, as of the end of July 2005 all
website work will be managed by Evan Lamb, a very talented artist/designer
who works in multiple mediums. I'm thrilled to have him onboard too!
I'm appreciative of all those who have
offered support and understanding with these changes!
