Lydia 9/25/05, the last day of breeding. Weight at breeding 24 lbs, tuck up 14 1/2" around.
Lydia 10/25/05, 32 days in whelp. She's starting to thicken in the loin area as well as the tuckup is now starting to fill in. Current weight 27 lbs.
Lydia 10/27/05, 34 days in whelp. The pictures taken today show much more growth than a couple days ago.
again taken 10/27/05. Weight is 30 lbs (a gain of 6 total pounds) as of 36 days in whelp; 10/29/05.
Lydia 10/30/05, 37 days in whelp.
In this and the next photo you can see the rib spring she's developed, 38 days in whelp 10/31/05.
Ellie (Linda & Mike's daughter) had just come home from a Halloween party with wax "Angelina Jolie lips," so I was gonna have her pose with her.
Lydia decided the lips would make a good snack.
"Lip" pics taken 11/2/05, 40 days in whelp.
As you can see, she is definitely carrying these pups in her ribs as well as everywhere else!!! (11/5/05)
Lydia's weight is at 31 lbs, her tuck up now measures 22" (a 7 1/2" girth gain); 11/5/05, 43 days in whelp. |
She appears a bit fuller on her one side than the other.
Weight as of 11/12 is 32 lbs, total gain of 8 lbs.
As of 11/16/05 (day 55) Lydia's weight is at 35 lbs (we've hit the 11 lb gain) and her tuck up (ok she has no "up" anymore) measures 26" for a girth gain of 11 1/2").
Taken 11/17/05 (day 56), Lydia is still expanding. Pups started moving a lot last weekend and lately it's been like little race meets in her belly!
"If I curl up really small, no one will see I'm not so svelt anymore!"
Lydia stretching out belly up, like grand mother, mother, daughter! Tara and PhaseYa both did this in their pregnancies too. (11/17/05)
Lydia with her housemate, Hayley, day 56. A side by side comparison gives the real picture on how large she really is.
Day 59 (11/19/05) Lydia is now starting to slow down. Her temperature has dropped to the low 99s for the day.
She's still eating (like a hog!) and is very verbally demanding if her meals aren't on time. Pups are still having relay races and wrestling matches. You can see little paws rubbing and noses pushing, note the size difference between 11/5 and today! Lydia's temperature has been in the 99 range since 11/19 during the day hours but going up to 100 right before bed time. We're still waiting for that temp to drop to the 98s. Lydia visited the vet today for a puppy count xray. The vet counted 6 for sure and a possible 7th. Lydia herself came from a litter of 6 and that's how many we have been hoping for! Time will tell! November 24th was the big day, Lydia went into labor and things seemed to progress normally. The first puppy's sack started to emerge however the pup was coming tail first, no rear feet. After her trying for some time to push the pup out and us trying to help her, we opted to go to the ER vet. Thankfully it was a whippet friend we knew, Dr Lisa Costello, who was on call! After explaining to Lisa what was going on I asked if she could use forceps to remove the pup whom we thought at the time was already deceased. Lisa checked Lydi and the pup, finding the same flacid tail that seemed to have no resistance to pressure she felt too that the pup was gone. Fortunately, and to all of our joy, he was not! Unfortunately the pup's tail was severed. Still he was alive! After some time, Lydia whelped two more boys and pup #4 was enroute but face first (no feet again). This pup lodged in the birth canal and we opted for a C Section at that time since there were at least 3 more pups to come. Lisa did an amazing job and all three girls were brought into us for clean up and checking over. It had been a very rough morning, afternoon and now working into the evening. We went over each and every puppy very carefully and one of the girls had a severe cleft palette leaving her unable to nurse. It seems to me that God tests us, puts before us tasks and tribulations but also joy. We had one little boy whom we thought we'd lost, 2 more boys and 2 healthy girls but we would leave the office with only those 5. A dear friend had passed away that Thanksgiving morning and in my heart I believe God felt that puppy girl was needed by Marti's side to bring joy to her heart too. As hard as it is to loose a puppy, we were blessed with 5. God Speed Marti, thank you for loving our baby like we know you will. |
